Exterior
catheters, also sometimes referred to as external condom catheter, penis
sheaths, or bladder sheaths, are a significant part of urinary incontinence
management for millions of men. There are many modifications available and
styles, materials, but the basic set up of these devices remains the same: This
is a special condom that fits over the penis and is attached to a tube that
collects urine.
Most
catheters are necessary until you regain the ability to urinate on your own,
which is usually a short period of time. Elderly people and those with a
permanent injury or severe illness may need to use urinary catheters for a much
longer time or permanently.
